Pi Mu Chapter History
The Pi Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded on on the Campus of Western Carolina University on November 26, 1986. The charter brothers were: Lionel Toussaint Kennedy, Leon Wayne Parker, Kenneth G. Love, Morris James Hatcher, James O. Morris, Cedric Deon Lee and Quentin C. Madden.
The charter brothers were determined to establish a Fraternity that was responsive to the many needs of the local and college community while stressing the values of brotherhood among African American men. Many of the brothers (The Charter Line of Pi Mu Chapter) were familiar with Phi Beta Sigma from members they knew from other colleges or functions that Sigma's may have sponsored. In the Spring of 1986, Toussaint Kennedy and Morris Hatcher went to the campus library to research the Fraternity. The group reviewed the information, and it was agreed that we should contact the National Headquarters concerning starting a chapter. William E. Stanley (who would later become the National President), was in charge of Special Projects for the Fraternity. He was given the responsibility of being our Crescent Adviser as well as our liaison to Nationals. Several trips were made between Atlanta and North Carolina by Stanley and the prospective brother.
When the Crescent Club was finally formed in the Fall of 1986, there were 11 Crescents. The line was given the name of Blue Knights. One of which was brother Quentin Madden who was a Freshman at the time. Even though he did not have a GPA, he was allowed to pledge for two reasons: 1) He had an excellent High School transcript and, 2) Showed a true desire and willingness to help build the chapter. He was allowed to pledge but could not become a brother until he acquired college credit hours.
On November 26, 1986, six of the 11 original Crescents were inducted into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. A new Chapter was approved for the campus of Western Carolina University as well. The Chapter name is Pi Mu. The induction ceremony was held in Atlanta, GA. on the campus of Morris Brown University. A follow-up dinner was held at the Pascal Hotel which was attended by then National President Moses C. McClendon.
The original chapter officers were: President - Kenneth G. Love Vice President - Morris J. Hatcher Treasure/Chaplain - James O. Morris Historian - Leon W. Parker Dean of Pledges - Cedric D. Lee
